    Major Units & Facilities ...

The UNSW Analytical Centre offers a wide range of state-of-art materials and chemicals analytical instruments through each research and experimental units and facilities.

 Electron Microscope Unit

 Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry Facility

The EMU provides a comprehensive array of specimen preparation and imaging and analysis equipment. Through its state-of-the-art instruments, EMU supports a full range of conventional instruments for optical, electron and x-ray imaging.

The following detailed lists of instrumentation are available at the EMU website:

  •   Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)
  •   Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
  •   Focussed Ion Beam (FIB) Microscope
  •   Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)
  •   Electron Probe Micro Analyser (EPMA)
  •   X-ray Tomograph Microscope (XRM)

The BMSF is comprehensively equipped for molecular analysis with several modern mass spectrometers, many of which are coupled to chemical separation devices such as gas and liquid chromatographs. Off-line separation devices are also available.

The following detailed lists of instrumentation are available at the BMSF web site:

  •   GC/MS instruments
  •   LC/MS, LC/MS/MS and LC-LC/MS/MS equipment
  •   MALDI MS
  •   LC & gel separation equipment

 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility

Solid State & Elemental Analysis Unit

The NMR is equipped to an international standard with state-of-the art equipment, featuring five Bruker spectrometers: DMX 600 and 500 NMR spectrometers, two DPX 300 NMR spectrometers controlled by Linux workstations and an EMX X-Band ESR spectrometer. A Varian Inova 300 is dedicated to solid state NMR measurements. All the spectrometers are fitted for the latest experimental innovations, enabling execution of the most up to date experiments in this still rapidly developing area of materials analysis and nano-structural research

The detailed information of instrumentation are available at the NMR website.

The SSEAU manages instruments for studying the microstructures of molecular and crystalline materials, analysing the chemical composition of surfaces, and determining the elemental composition of bulk samples.

The SSEAU provides a wide range of state-of-art analytical facilites: X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Surface Science (SS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP).
