New User Checklist

To ensure ethics and safety compliance, BRIL users are required to obtain the relevant approvals and training prior to being given independent access. Please read this checklist carefully to avoid delays in the registration process.

  • Complete a building induction with Ken Wyse. These are held every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30am. Meet Ken outside the lifts on L4 Lowy (just show up, no need to book)

  • Complete induction for the relevant animal facility. Contact Anick Standley (CCI), Alison Ryan (BRC Lowy), or Sandra Spathos (BRC WW) to arrange. Users who are not planning to work with animals or use BRC facilities can receive a basic induction from a BRIL staff member

  • Register on the BRIL online booking system and read the BRIL Terms and Conditions

  • Provide photo for user profile

  • Read Behavioural Requirements for OGTR-certified PC2 Animal Facility and "Declare As Read" on SafeSys. If unable to login try the format adunsw\z[your zID] and zPass, if still unable to login please notify us so we can arrange access

  • Read the SWPs and RMFs for the specific instruments/procedures relevant to your project (consult the Workplace Health and Safety pageand "Declare As Read" on SafeSys

  • If working with live animals provide ACEC approval letter (obtained through UNSW Ethics Online) and read the BRIL Conditions of Use Relating to Animal Care and Ethics

  • If working with GMOs provide GTRC/OGTR approval or exemption

  • If using cytotoxic or unknown substances provide SWP, RMF and MSDS to cover handling, clean-up and dealing with spills inside BRIL facilities

  • If working after hours (6pm-8am Mon-Fri, weekends, public holidays and UNSW holidays) read BRIL After Hours Guidelines and complete BRIL After Hours Form

  • Consult the table in the "Training Prerequisites" section below to see what training is required. After completing the required training please email certificates or myUNSW training history screenshot (including your name)

  • For MRI projects please also complete MRI Submission Form and email to Andre Bongers

 

* UNSW policy doesn't allow undergraduate students to work unsupervised in a laboratory
