Professor Richard Tilley is the Director of Electron Microscope Unit at UNSW. His research is focused on the solution synthesis of nanoparticles and quantum dots for applications ranging from catalysis to biomedical imaging. He did his PhD in the Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, UK, after which he was a Postdoctoral Fellow for two years at the Toshiba basic R&D Center, Japan. A native of the UK, he graduated with a Masters of Chemistry from Oxford University, UK.

Research Interests

Research into the synthesis of nanoparticles with a range of applications including MRI contrast agents, catalysts and solar cells. Characterization of nanoparticle sizes, shapes, crystallography and properties using electron microscopy.

My research focuses on understanding how proteins are organised within the lipid bilayer of the plasma membrane and how changes in this organisation can result in disease.

Role 
As a flagship instrument (FIB) manager/engineer in AMMRF, Charlie’s duties include providing advice on advanced EM techniques to multidisciplinary research academics and postgraduate research students, teaching and training users on FIB techniques, characterisation of materials with various advanced EM techniques, developing new practical protocols on DB SEM/FIB applications, and managing technical maintenance of the dualbeam FIB. He also acts as the point of contact for external clients, and supports their needs on analytical issues and collaborative research.

Role

I hold a joint appointment between the Solid State & Elemental Analysis Unit (SSEAU) and the Electron Microscope Unit (EMU). 
My role at the EMU is to conduct collaborative research in the area of advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging and spectroscopic analysis, and help managing the JEOL F200 TEM.
At the SSEAU, I develop techniques and protocols for time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) analysis on biological and organic-based materials, particularly in 2D and 3D imaging.

Interest

Development and application of TEM and X-ray characterisation techniques on functional nanocrystals.

Rhiannon Kuchel is an electron microscopist at the University of New South Wales, (Sydney). With a PhD from Macquarie University her thesis focused on the effects of environmental stress on the immune system of temperate pearl oysters. Rhiannon’s role at the EMU is to conduct collaborative research as well as teach postgraduate students from a variety of disciplines (biology, chemistry, materials science/engineering), focusing on the use of transmission (both standard imaging and cryo) and scanning electron microscopy.
