Professor Ittner is the head of the Transgenic Animal Unit (TAU) at the University of New South Wales. He has over 15 years of experience with genetically modified mice. He trained in medicine at the University of Ulm in Germany, and received his M.D. from the University of Zurich in Switzerland in 2002, followed by postdocs at the University of Zurich, studying neuronal stem cells and signalling pathways, and the University of Sydney, focusing on basic pathomechanisms in Alzheimer’s disease. In 2013, he was appointed to the University of New South Wales in Sydney to establish the Transgenic Animal Unit. His own research focuses on understanding disease mechanisms in neurodegeneration and the development of novel therapies for Alzheimer’s disease, related forms of dementia and stroke.

Dr Fabien Delerue

Dr Fabien Delerue

Dr Fabien Delerue’s career spans over 20 years practice in animal handling, surgery, and generation of animal models of diseases. He gained his first research experience in the Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience (Bordeaux, France) and moved to the preclinical CNS Centre of Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd (Basel, Switzerland) where he gained expertise in in vivo activities, developing several animal models of human pathologies (sleep disorders, anxiety, AD/PD, depression, schizophrenia), and implementing those models for the screening of new drugs. Further, Dr Delerue moved to the Alzheimer and Parkinson’s disease laboratory (Brain and Mind Research Institute, University of Sydney) where his research focused on the production and characterization of new transgenic mouse models of neurodegeneration. He is currently a member of the International Society for Transgenic Technologies (ISTT), the manager of the Transgenic Animal Unit (TAU), and Lecturer for the Dementia Research Unit (DRU) at UNSW.
