Biosciences Precinct (E26) Induction

Important message:

Due to the recent developments around COVID-19, ALL BMSF lab inductions will be postponed/cancelled as of Friday 20th March 2020.

Rest assured inductions will resume once we receive the directive to do so.

Existing users are welcome to continue to use our facilities, as long as the appropriate distancing measures are followed.  Remote work on the instruments is highly encouraged.

We are also available to run samples on your behalf.  If you are interested in this option, please contact us directly and we will make the appropriate arrangements.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your cooperation.

If you have other questions, please contact the Laboratory Coordinator.

********************************************************************************************************************************

To ensure a smooth and successful induction process, please complete the following steps carefully.

Failure to complete these steps may mean an incomplete induction and access will not be granted.

Before starting, please read this first:

User registration and induction consist of:

  1. Registering to the BMSF node on ACLS
  2. Submitting a completed Project Registration Form (PRF).  This is to be completed by you and approved by your supervisor.  Your supervisor is to send the form to the Laboratory Coordinator as approval
  3. Reading the required documents on SafeSys (Chemical Sciences only)
  4. Correctly answering all questions in the relevant questionnaire for each lab
  5. Attending an induction tour.  Registrations are through Eventbrite.

Failure to follow these steps will mean induction is incomplete and access will not be granted.

Each lab induction is to be done separately (ie, if you have been inducted to the Wallace Wurth lab, you do not have automatic access to the Chemical Sciences lab unless you have been inducted to both).

1 - Meet BMSF Staff

  • Have you already spoken to a BMSF staff member about your project or analytical enquiry?

If not, please contact BMSF at bmsf@unsw.edu.au or a BMSF staff member directly. You will need to provide a short description of what you want to achieve with your project.

  • Arrange a meeting to discuss your analytical needs with a BMSF staff member.

This will inform us about:

a. Whether your analytical needs can be met with our current mass spectrometry methods and instrumentation

b. Whether new method development is required

c. Any relevant costs, charges and training, if applicable

d. Which BMSF labs you require induction to

  • Once a BMSF staff member has confirmed you should do an induction (either verbally or by email), please follow the instructions below.

2 - User Registration

  • Register online to the BMSF ACLS system by following this link:
  1. Click on “Register Here”
  2. Choose “Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry Facility”
  3. Fill out your details.

If you have already previously registered to ACLS and can see the BMSF node when you log on, you do not to re-register.

  • Download and complete the Project Registration Form (PRF), then have it signed and approved by your supervisor. NOTE: Make sure you and your supervisor have Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat installed.

Your supervisor should then send the approved form to the Laboratory Coordinator.

Ensure that this is submitted before your next scheduled instrument training (if applicable), as it is generally a requirement before training starts. If no PRF is received within four weeks of your induction, your ACLS account will be deleted.

Should you have questions about completing this form, please contact the Laboratory Coordinator.

3 - Health and Safety Induction

NOTE: You MUST have been referred by a BMSF staff member prior to registering for induction.

The Questionnaire is to be completed by referring to the Induction Notes. This should be completed at least one day before induction.

  • Attend the induction tour (Please allow approximately 45 minutes for the induction tours)

Please register to one of the dates below through Eventbrite and save this on your calendar. Late arrivals (more than 10 minutes late) will require you re-register for the next available date.

Biosciences Precinct Induction tour dates for 2020 are below.  Click on this link to register for an induction tour.

1. Friday 17th January 2020, 11 am

2. Friday 7th February 2020, 11 am

3. Friday 28th February 2020, 11 am

4. Friday 20th March 2020, 11 am

5. Thursday 9th April 2020, 11 am

6. Friday, 1st May 2020, 11 am

7. Friday 22nd May 2020, 11 am

NOTE: Failure to do any of the above steps will mean induction is incomplete and access will not be activated.

4 - Training (if applicable)

This would have already been discussed in your initial meeting with BMSF. Once you have been deemed competent by a BMSF staff member, please contact Jennifer Tran and Sydney Liu Lau (Laboratory Coordinator) so you can obtain booking rights for the instrument you trained for.

Note that successful induction and ACLS registration does not constitute automatic access to our instruments.

Any questions?

If you are unsure about any of these steps, please contact the Laboratory Coordinator.
