BRIL Muromachi Microwave Fixation System

Conventional tissue fixation methods make it difficult to take accurate neurochemical measurements in the brain due to rapid changes in the concentration of metabolites post-mortem caused by residual enzyme activity. The Muromachi microwave fixation system offers an effective way to inactivate these enzymes in the intact specimen. When sufficient microwave power is focused on the target, all enzymes within the tissue can be completely inactivated in less than 1 second. This fixation also allows the brain to be dissected easily and reproducibly at room temperature and allows effective measurement of acetylcholine, choline, cyclic AMP, cyclic GMP, GABA, DOPA, 5-HTP, serotonin, endorphin, phosphorylated proteins prostaglandin, catecholamines and their metabolites in the brain.
