BRIL is located within the PC2 animal facilities at the Lowy Cancer Research Centre and Wallace Wurth Building, both of which maintain a specific pathogen free (SPF) and PC2 facility status. UNSW Animal Services have specific policies and regulations regarding the use of animals within the facility. To maintain the SPF status of the facility new animals must come directly from an approved supplier. Under some circumstances, Animal Services may allow animals to come from other facilities. To discuss this possibility, please contact the Facility Manager.
It is a condition of the UNSW Animal Care and Ethics Committee (ACEC) that only animals covered under an approved UNSW ACEC application can be housed the facility. For non-UNSW users, you will be required to submit an ethics application with a UNSW academic as CI to cover the work done within Animal Services and BRIL. Housing animals with Animal Services also requires pre-approval. Details can be found on the Research Ethics and Compliance Website.
In addition to the above, to utilise animal holding facilities researchers must receive a facility induction from Animal Services before being granted access. To see the other training pre-requisites for working in a PC2 animal facility, please consult the BRIL New User Checklist.
